Common Name: Splendid Parakeet
Description: General plumage green; throat and facial area cobalt blue with slightly darker cheeks and throat; breast red; abdomen and under tail-coverts orange-yellow; outer lesser and median wing-coverts as well as secondary-coverts pale blue; outer webs of flight-feathers and under wing-coverts purple; outer webs of secondaries greenish-blue; upperside of four middle tail-feathers green, outer tail feathers yellow with dusky green base; tail underside yellow; bill blackish; narrow periophthalmic ring grey; iris greyish-brown; feet grey.
Gender Determination: Female as male but with duller plumage and less extensive blue facial area lores pale blue breast green outer lesser and median wingcoverts as well as secondarycoverts very pale blue variable pale wingstripe to underside of flightfeathers absent
Trainability: Shy but sweet they are able to learn simple tricks

Diet: Seed mix of canary grass seed, various millets, wild bird food, pellets, oats, wheat and some hemp; millet spray; various fruit and vegetables, especially carrot and apple; rosehips
Housing: (For pet bird) Minimum cage size of 18 x 18 x 18 inches, with bar spacing from 3/8 to no more than 1/2 an inch. Perches should vary in diameter and texture.
Loudness: Quiet parakeet with melodic voice, suited to apartments

Notes: Active birds with a sweet disposition
Breeding Notes: Regularly achieved and not difficult; pair should be isolated; several pairs can breed in very large aviary, but then young should be removed soon after leaving nest; breeding begins mostly in April, grass stalks and leaves will be used for nest material; clutch usually 4 to 5 eggs; incubation 18 to 19 days; fledgling period 4 to 5 weeks; young independent after 3 weeks; should then be separated from parents as several breeding's per year often occur; young mostly shy and flighty after leaving nest; can fly against wire mesh and injure themselves; this could be covered with material or leafy branches.
