Latin Name: Cyanoramphus Novaezelandiae
Common Name: Red Fronted Kakariki
Description: General plumage green; yellowish-green to breast, abdomen and under tail-coverts; forehead, crown and stripe extending to behind eye red; red patch to both sides of lower back; outer webs of flight-feathers violet-blue; iris red; feet grey; bill pale bluish-grey with blackish tip.
Gender Determination: Males slightly larger but a DNA test is necessary to be certain
Trainability: Active and very intelligent with good problem solving techniques
Length: 27 cm (10.5 ins), wing length 125-139 mm (5 - 5.5 ins).
Average Lifespan: 10 years
Average Weight: 60 to 80 grams
Song: Quiet chi-chi-chi-chi noises
Diet: Seed mix of various millets, some niger and hemp; greenfood, fruit and vegetables
Housing: Minimum cage size of 36 x 30 x 30 inches with bar spacing of 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Perches of varying diameters and textures should be provided.
Loudness: Not noisy, and good for apartments
Talking Ability: Some talking ability
Notes: Very, very active, nonstop playing. Known to stroll around the top of their cage upside-down. Plenty of toys should be provided, including foraging-type toys. Though not huge fans of excessive cuddling, they enjoy sitting on their owners, though probably not in the same spot for very long. They prefer their food bowls to be on the floor of the cage.
Breeding Notes: Regularly achieved; prefers breeding in spring; incubation 18 days; fledging period 4 weeks; 2 to 3 breedings a year possible; breeding also possible in communal aviary; can be used to foster young of other Australian parakeets.
