Dilute Blue - Pacific Parrotlet Forpus Coelestis Bird
| Notable traits of the Dilute Blue Bird: Pacific Parrotlet (Forpus Coelestis) |
| Latin Name: |
Forpus Coelestis |
| Common Name: |
Dilute Blue |
| Average Lifespan: |
15 years |
| Notes: |
All of our baby Parrotlets are parent raised for the first three weeks of their life. This practice helps to ensure that a strong immune & gut flora system develops.
At three weeks old the babies are pulled from the nest and we begin to be handfed and socialize. Through the weaning process, the birds are introduced to a variety of pellets, seed, fruits, vegetables, rice, and pasta. They start to choose favourite types of food, explore, and begin to develop personalities. We encourage new bird owners to join us in this stage of growth. The opportunity to learn and grow together is essential for a bonded lasting friendship for many years to come.
All birds are abundance weaned and are eating fully on their own before they can go to their new home.
Parrotlets are one of the smallest known parrots in the world. They have a lifespan of up to 15 years. They make wonderful companions and have all of the same general characteristics as the larger parrots. However, do not let their size fool you. Although they are a true parrot in a small body, they are capable of intense loyalty, love and friendship, intelligence, curiosity and energy. Parrotlets make the perfect apartment or condominium bird due to their smaller housing requirements and low noise level. Parrotlets are very small, so it is not a wise choice for a small child.
Parrotlets have a special need for vitamin A in their diet, so a variety of orange vegetables and fruits is recommended several times a week. A combination of seed and pellets with a vitamin supplement should also be offered. Food and water dishes need to be placed on the floor of the cage for a new Parrotlet until you notice them using the higher dishes in the cage. Water source needs to be non-chlorinated, as the chlorination levels in town water can harm a bird.
We often advise that you start off with just one Parrotlet as it will remain much more social towards its human owner. We also strongly advise against having a mirror in the cage as it promotes aggression, and the Parrotlet may become less friendly to its owners, and more friendly to its own image in the mirror. Two to three toys are suggested with a variety of textures for stimulation and enjoyment. A variety of perch thicknesses is necessary to exercise the bird’s feet. |
